A new feature length documentary about China’s obsession with Bordeaux fine wine is set to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on 13th February – and worldwide release is expected to follow. Red Obsession is an Australian film by Lion Rock Films produced by Andrew Caillard MW of auctioneers Langtons and directed by vigneron and producer Warwick Ross and screen writer David Roach. The film is narrated by none other than Russell Crowe – who starred in the wine film A Good Year.
Red Obsession was filmed in both Bordeaux and China and features appearances and interviews with wine writers and critics including Jancis Robinson, Steven Spurrier, Michel Bettane, Jeannie Cho Lee and Robert Parker as well as prestigious chateaux owners and wine producers from Chateaux Haut Brion, Margaux, Latour, La Fleur Petrus and Lafite Rothschild. Producers were also given access to Lafite’s new vineyard in Shandong Province. It also features interviews with wine collectors Peter Tseng and George Tong.
Andrew Caillard told Decanter that:
“Red Obsession is about the passion and obsession that Bordeaux’s ethereal wines can evoke in people and the risks and opportunities they take in pursuit of their love for wine. It is a study of the human spirit and cultural perspectives, set against the aesthetic of the Bordeaux and Chinese landscapes as the European debt crisis and global uncertainty gather momentum.”
He added, “As an Australian production, we were able to observe the Bordeaux and China wine scenes without being caught up in the hyperbole. It has been an amazing journey.”
Lion Rock’s description of the film states:
“For three centuries Bordeaux has commanded an almost mythical status in the world of fine wines. But recently prices for prestige wines have skyrocketed.
Something unprecedented is happening to the Bordeaux fine wine market and that something is China. Wine master, Andrew Caillard, sets out to explore the Bordeaux phenomenon. Just how good can really good wine be? Is it taste, prestige or investment that is driving the demand for the wines of Bordeaux? What compels a cashed up industrialist to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single bottle of wine? Red Obsession is a story of aspiration for greatness. It is also a study of power and passion in high places.”
It sounds a fascinating film and is one I will definitely go out of my way to see. Jane Anson has seen the film and you can read her review of it over at Decanter.com.
